Royal Canin says Poodle Adult is specially formulated for adult Poodles and highlights coat health, dental health and muscle tone.
Its published composition begins: maize, dehydrated poultry proteins, wheat gluten, animal fats, rice, maize flour, maize gluten, hydrolysed animal proteins, beet pulp…
The first ingredient in a breed-specific Poodle food is maize.
That does not make maize inherently harmful. It does, however, make it reasonable to ask what “breed-specific” means in practice and whether the formulation approach is the one you want for your dog.

Royal Canin Australia publishes Poodle Adult at 30% protein and 19% fat. PFA Turkey guarantees minimum 30% crude protein and 16% crude fat. Analytical declarations are not necessarily expressed on an identical regulatory basis, so percentages should be read with the full formulation rather than as a stand-alone quality score.
The Ingredient Lists Tell The Story Better Than The Front Of The Bag.

Turkey, chicken & ocean fish are the animal proteins highlighted in a grain-free formulation. It also includes hemp seed oil and natural prebiotics.
Royal Canin Poodle Adult
Maize is first, followed by dehydrated poultry proteins, wheat gluten, animal fats, rice, maize flour and maize gluten before hydrolysed animal proteins appear later.
One bag leads with a named formulation built around turkey, chicken and ocean fish. The other leads with maize and describes its animal protein broadly as poultry.
That is a factual difference in the published labels not a claim that every dog needs grain-free food or that one ingredient alone determines food quality.
What Does “Poodle-Specific” Actually Mean?
Royal Canin says its Poodle Adult kibble has a shape, size, texture and formula specially adapted for Poodles. It also highlights omega-3 fatty acids, borage oil, calcium chelators and an adapted protein content.
Those are real formulation choices. But a breed name on the bag does not remove the need to read the ingredient panel.
A Poodle is still a dog. The question is not how specific the marketing sounds. The question is whether the complete food suits the individual dog eating it.
The bigger Australian picture
Skin, Gut And Ear Problems Keep Sending Dogs To The Vet.

Breed Specific Branding Comes At A Premium.
Petbarn currently lists Royal Canin Poodle Adult 7.5kg bundles at a member-equivalent price of about $12.79/kg, with substantially higher non member pricing shown on bundles. PFA Turkey pricing varies by pack size, so this is not an apples to apples small pack comparison.
The point isn't to pretend PFA always wins on price. It is to ask what you are paying for: the ingredient panel, the formulation, the brand, the breed specific positioning or some combination of all four.

Royal Canin Has Science Behind It. That Doesn't End The Comparison.
Royal Canin has extensive nutritional research and decades of global brand recognition. Those are legitimate strengths.
Owners can still ask harder questions: Why is maize first? Why is the animal protein described as poultry rather than a named species? Why are wheat gluten and maize gluten prominent in the formulation? What does breed specific nutrition materially change in this bag?
A famous name is a reason to investigate a food not a reason to stop reading the label.

Turn the bag around. Read the first ingredients. Compare the formulation. Then look at how your dog is actually doing.
