The most useful choice considers the whole recipe: life stage, animal ingredients, nutritional suitability, feeding needs and any known exclusions—not a single front-of-pack term.

What does grain-free dog food mean?

Grain-free means the recipe is formulated without grain ingredients. It does not describe every other ingredient or determine whether a food suits an individual dog by itself.

Do all dogs need to avoid grains?

No. Grain-containing and grain-free formulations can both be suitable. The whole recipe and your dog's individual requirements matter.

Why isn't grain-free automatically better?

Removing grains does not automatically make one food nutritionally superior. Protein sources, fats, fibre, energy density, micronutrients, life-stage suitability and feeding amount all contribute to the complete formulation.

Grain exclusion and protein sensitivity are different

A grain-free recipe may still contain chicken, fish, lamb or another animal ingredient. Check the full ingredient list for every ingredient your dog needs to avoid.

Why does puppy suitability matter?

Puppies should receive food intended for growth. Puppy Chicken & Duck is the current PFA recipe designated for the puppy pathway; adult pathway rankings are not substituted for puppies.

What does complete and balanced mean?

A complete-and-balanced food is intended to provide the daily nutrient profile for its stated life stage when fed as directed. Confirm the individual product label and feeding directions.

How do the current PFA recipes differ?

Turkey, Chicken & Ocean Fish is the general adult starting recipe. Kangaroo & Ocean Fish leads the current adult itchy-skin and sensitive-digestion pathways. Turkey & Lamb – Low Fat is promoted when a lower-fat requirement is selected. Puppy Chicken & Duck is reserved for the puppy pathway. Named ingredient exclusions are applied before selection.

How should a new food be introduced?

Transition gradually and monitor how your dog responds. Some dogs, particularly those with sensitive stomachs, may benefit from a slower change.

Which PFA recipe might suit my dog?

What does grain-free mean?

How slowly should I change foods?
