Why We Chose to Stay Australian Owned and Australian Made
Over the years, more than one person has said to us:
“You could save a fortune by manufacturing overseas.”
They are probably right.
There may be places where pet food can be produced more cheaply. Labour may cost less. Ingredients may be sourced differently. Larger international supply chains may create opportunities to reduce expenses.
From a purely financial point of view, manufacturing overseas could have been the easier choice.
But Fiona and I did not start Pet Food Australia to create the cheapest pet food possible.
We started it to create food we would feel confident feeding to the animals in our own care.
That difference has guided many of the decisions we have made since.
Our Standards Were Shaped Long Before Pet Food Australia
Before establishing Pet Food Australia, Fiona and I had already spent decades caring for animals.
For approximately 27 years, we operated an animal shelter and related pet-care services. During that time, we worked hands-on with thousands of dogs and other animals.
We saw dogs arrive with different backgrounds, temperaments and health needs.
Some had been well cared for.
Others needed time, patience and rehabilitation.
That experience taught us that decisions affecting animals should never be made only by looking at the cheapest option.
When an animal depends on you, quality, consistency and accountability matter.
Those lessons stayed with us when we began developing pet food.
We were not looking at a spreadsheet and asking:
“How cheaply can this be made?”
We were asking:
“Would we be comfortable feeding this every day?”
What 27 Years of Rescuing Dogs Taught Us About Health
Staying Close to the Manufacturing Process
Choosing to manufacture in Australia allows us to remain closer to the people, processes and decisions behind our food.
That matters to us.
Pet food manufacturing is not simply a matter of combining ingredients and placing them into a bag. It involves formulation, ingredient sourcing, production standards, quality processes, packaging and ongoing communication between everyone involved.
Being able to work with Australian manufacturing partners gives us a level of connection and accountability that we value.
It means we are not trying to manage everything from the other side of the world.
It means conversations can happen directly.
Questions can be raised.
Changes can be discussed.
And when our name appears on a bag, we remain connected to how that food is produced.
Australian Made Is Not Just a Badge to Us
“Australian made” can easily become another phrase printed on packaging.
For us, it has always meant more than that.
It represents a deliberate decision about the kind of company we want to operate.
It means supporting Australian manufacturing.
It means working with people closer to home.
It means maintaining a direct relationship with the production of our recipes.
Most importantly, it means accepting responsibility.
When customers choose Pet Food Australia, they are trusting us with something they feed their dog every day.
We do not take that lightly.
Australian Ownership Matters Too
Remaining Australian owned is just as important to us as manufacturing here.
Pet Food Australia was created from our experience, our values and our belief that pet owners deserved another choice.
We wanted to build a company that could make decisions based on what we believed was right for dogs and their owners.
That becomes harder when decisions are driven solely by outside investors, distant parent companies or pressure to maximise short-term returns.
Remaining Australian owned allows us to protect the direction of the business.
It allows us to keep asking the question that has guided us from the beginning:
“What is best for the dogs eating our food?”
That question does not always lead to the cheapest answer.
It does not always lead to the easiest answer.
But it is the answer we are prepared to stand behind.
Could We Have Made Different Choices?
Of course.
We could have pursued lower manufacturing costs.
We could have built the brand around being the cheapest option.
We could have handed more control to people who had never worked directly with the animals we were trying to help.
But that would not have been Pet Food Australia.
Our company was built from years of practical experience with dogs, not from a plan to enter a growing market as cheaply as possible.
The values came first.
The products came after.
A Decision We Continue to Make
Staying Australian owned and Australian made was not one decision made at the beginning of the business.
It is a decision we continue to make.
As costs rise and competition increases, there will always be pressure to look for cheaper alternatives.
We understand that.
Running an Australian business is not always easy.
But every time we reconsider what matters most, we arrive at the same conclusion.
We want to remain close to the process.
We want to know who we are working with.
We want to protect the standards behind our food.
And we want Australian pet owners to know that the people whose names are behind the company are still here, still involved and still accountable.

Why We Chose to Stay Australian Owned and Australian Made
For us, accountability means more than putting our name on the front of a bag.
It means accepting responsibility for the decisions behind it.
That includes who we work with, how our recipes are produced, what standards we expect and how we respond when customers ask questions.
When people feed Pet Food Australia to their dogs, they are not making a one-off purchase. They are trusting us with something that becomes part of their dog’s daily routine.
We believe that trust deserves a clear line of responsibility.
Accountability Should Be Easy to Find
In large international businesses, accountability can become complicated.
A brand may be owned in one country, manufactured in another and managed by people somewhere else entirely.
When a customer has a question, it may pass through several departments before reaching someone who can provide an answer.
That is not the kind of business we wanted to build.
Pet Food Australia is Australian owned, and we remain directly involved in the company.
Our customers are not dealing with a distant parent company or a brand name controlled from overseas.
They are dealing with the people who built the business and whose reputation is attached to every product.
Our Name Is on Every Bag
When your name is connected to a product, decisions feel different.
You do not simply ask whether something is legally acceptable or financially efficient.
You also ask whether you are prepared to explain and defend that decision to the people who trust you.
That is one reason staying closely involved in manufacturing matters to us.
We want to understand the process.
We want to be able to ask questions.
We want to know who is responsible at each stage.
And if something needs attention, we want to be able to address it directly rather than feeling separated from the process by distance and layers of management.
Australian Made Is About More Than Location
Manufacturing in Australia does not automatically make every product perfect.
We would never suggest that geography alone guarantees quality.
What matters is how the location supports the way we want to operate.
Producing our food in Australia allows us to maintain closer relationships with our manufacturing partners and remain connected to the standards behind our recipes.
It also means supporting local capability, employment and industry.
For us, Australian manufacturing is not simply a marketing message.
It is part of a broader decision to keep responsibility closer to home.
We Did Not Want to Lose Control of the Original Purpose
Businesses naturally change as they grow.
New opportunities appear.
Costs increase.
Different people offer advice.
Some decisions that once seemed unthinkable can begin to look attractive on a spreadsheet.
That is why protecting the original purpose matters.
Pet Food Australia was not created because we believed the market needed another generic bag of food.
It was created because decades of working with animals had shown us how much everyday care matters.
We wanted to produce food that reflected that experience.
Remaining Australian owned helps us protect that purpose.
It means the company can continue to be guided by people who understand why it was created in the first place.

Not Every Decision Is About Maximum Profit
There are decisions that could potentially improve margins but weaken the business we set out to build.
Manufacturing overseas may be one of them.
Selling to a larger international company may be another.
Those options may make sense for some businesses, but they have never been the goal for us.
Profit matters because a business needs to remain sustainable.
It needs to employ people, develop products, serve customers and continue operating.
But profit should not become the only measure used to make every decision.
Sometimes the right decision is the one that protects trust, even if it costs more.
What Decades of Animal Care Taught Us
Working with thousands of animals taught us that responsibility cannot be outsourced emotionally.
You can delegate tasks.
You can work with experts.
You can rely on trusted partners.
But when an animal is in your care, the final responsibility still feels personal.
That same principle has followed us into Pet Food Australia.
We work with experienced manufacturers and professionals, but we do not see that as a reason to step away from responsibility.
We see it as our job to remain involved, ask questions and continue protecting the standards we believe matter.
The Pattern We Saw in Thousands of Rescue Dogs
Why This Still Matters Today
Customers have more choices than ever.
Packaging can look impressive.
Marketing claims can sound reassuring.
Brands can appear local even when their ownership and decision-making sit elsewhere.
We believe customers deserve clarity.
Australian owned means the business remains in Australian hands.
Australian made means our food is manufactured here.
Together, those choices reflect the kind of company we have chosen to remain.
Not because it is always the least expensive path.
Because it is the path that allows us to stay closer, more involved and more accountable.

Staying Australian owned and Australian made has never been about choosing the easiest path.
It has been about choosing the path we believe allows us to remain closest to our products, our customers and the standards we are prepared to stand behind.
That commitment matters even more as the business grows.
Growth Should Not Change the Reason You Started
Every growing business faces pressure.
There are new costs, new opportunities and new people offering advice about how things could be done more efficiently.
Some suggestions are valuable.
Others may improve margins while quietly weakening the reason the business existed in the first place.
That is why we keep returning to the same question:
What is best for the dogs eating our food?
That question helps us separate useful growth from growth that would take us away from our original purpose.
We want Pet Food Australia to become stronger, reach more pet owners and continue developing high-quality products.
But we do not want growth to come at the cost of accountability.
Staying Australian Is a Long-Term Commitment
Australian ownership is not something we see as temporary.
It is not a position we plan to hold only until a larger opportunity appears.
Pet Food Australia was built by Fiona and me from decades of direct experience with animals, and we want the company to remain guided by those values.
That means continuing to make decisions here.
It means remaining involved.
It means protecting the relationship between the people who own the business and the people who trust the products.
Australian made is part of that same commitment.
It keeps us connected to local manufacturing and to the people responsible for producing our food.
Why Customers Tell Us It Matters
Many customers choose us because of the ingredients, the recipes or the way their dog responds to the food.
But we also hear from people who say Australian ownership matters to them.
For some, it is about supporting Australian businesses.
For others, it is about wanting to know where decisions are being made.
Some simply feel more comfortable knowing the company behind the product is still here, accessible and accountable.
We understand that Australian ownership will not be the only factor people consider.
Price matters.
Nutrition matters.
A dog’s individual needs matter.
But for customers who value local ownership and manufacturing, we want those words to represent something real.
Trust Is Built When No One Is Watching
It is easy for a company to talk about values when the decisions are simple.
The real test comes when a cheaper option is available.
Would it reduce costs?
Would it increase margins?
Would most customers even notice?
Those are the moments when values become more than words.
For us, remaining Australian owned and Australian made is one of those decisions.
It is a choice we continue to make because it supports the kind of business we want Pet Food Australia to be.
We Are Not Claiming Australia Is the Only Place Quality Can Exist
There are excellent manufacturers and businesses in many countries.
This is not about suggesting that anything made overseas must be inferior.
It is about what works for us.
We believe staying in Australia gives us the proximity, relationships and accountability we want for our company.
It allows us to remain involved in a way that fits our values and our experience.
That is the standard we have chosen for ourselves.
The Responsibility Still Feels Personal
After so many years caring for animals, responsibility has never felt abstract to us.
When a dog depended on us in the shelter, we felt personally accountable for the decisions made on their behalf.
Pet Food Australia operates on a much larger scale, but the feeling has not changed.
Every bag is ultimately fed to someone’s dog.
Every customer is trusting us with part of that dog’s daily care.
That is why our names, our reputation and our involvement still matter.
What Australian Owned and Australian Made Means to Us
To us, it means:
- Keeping decision-making close to home.
- Staying involved in the manufacturing process.
- Supporting Australian capability and industry.
- Remaining accessible to our customers.
- Protecting the purpose behind the company.
- Accepting responsibility for the products carrying our name.
It does not mean we will never face difficult decisions.
It means we know what should guide us when those decisions arrive.

The Answer Has Remained the Same
Could we have chosen a cheaper path?
Probably.
Could different choices have been more profitable?
Perhaps.
But Fiona and I did not start Pet Food Australia to make the cheapest food or build a company disconnected from the people and processes behind its products.
We started it to create food we could proudly feed to animals in our own care.
That is why we chose to stay Australian owned.
That is why we chose to stay Australian made.
And that is why, when we ask what is best for the dogs eating our food, we continue to arrive at the same answer.
