Why We Started Pet Food Australia
Every business has a story.
People often assume ours began because Fiona and I saw a gap in the market.
Some, searched every pet store and every website looking for the perfect food for their r own dog and couldn't find one.
Some, lose a beloved pet and decided to change the industry.
Those are all common stories.
Ours is different.
Pet Food Australia wasn't created because we wanted to start another pet food company.
It was built over nearly three decades of working alongside thousands of animals.
Long before there was a logo, a website or a single bag of food, our lives revolved around helping animals.
Fiona had been grooming dogs since she was 15 years old and training them from the age of 14. Those early years laid the foundation for what became nearly three decades working together in animal rescue, boarding, pet care and dog behaviour.
Some days were incredibly rewarding.
Others were heartbreaking.
We met dogs that had been abandoned.
Dogs that had been neglected.
Dogs that had forgotten how to trust people.
We also met thousands of much loved family pets whose owners simply wanted to give them the happiest, healthiest life possible.
Every single animal taught us something.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms
One of the greatest lessons we learnt came through dog behaviour.
We were fortunate to learn from one of Australia's most respected dog behaviourists in Australia.
Very quickly we realised behaviour is rarely just behaviour.
A dog that seems anxious may actually be uncomfortable.
A dog that seems aggressive may be frightened.
A dog that refuses to settle may simply be in pain.
You have to look beyond what you can see.
That mindset changed how we looked at everything.
Especially nutrition.
The Patterns We Couldn't Ignore
Over the years, we began noticing the same patterns again and again.
Dogs arriving with itchy skin.
Constant scratching.
Poor coats.
Recurring digestive issues.
Owners spending thousands of dollars trying to find answers.
Sometimes the solution wasn't straightforward.
Sometimes veterinary treatment was exactly what was needed.
But there were also countless occasions where improvements followed changes to a dog's nutrition, daily routine and overall care.
The scratching eased.
The coat became healthier.
Digestion settled.
The dog seemed happier.
We never believed food was a miracle.
But after seeing these patterns repeated across thousands of animals over many years, we could no longer ignore how important nutrition really was.
Then there were the moments that stayed with us forever.

Oreo

Among the thousands of animals we cared for was a beautiful dog named Oreo (pictured above).
Oreo came to stay with us for around seven weeks while his family travelled overseas. When he arrived, one of his front legs was noticeably bowed, and his owner explained that surgery had already been booked for shortly after they returned home.
During his stay, Oreo received what every animal in our care received: consistency, a balanced diet, appropriate daily exercise and plenty of love and attention.
Week by week, we noticed his leg beginning to straighten.
By the time his family returned and visited their veterinarian, the surgery was no longer needed.
We didn't set out to achieve that outcome. We simply cared for Oreo the same way we cared for every animal entrusted to us.
His family continued to trust us with all five of their pets, often for several weeks at a time whenever they travelled overseas for work. That trust meant the world to us.

Why We Started Pet Food Australia
Experiences like Oreo's didn't convince us that food could solve every problem.
They reinforced something we had already been learning for years.
Nutrition matters.
Consistency matters.
Quality ingredients matter.
Looking after the whole animal matters.
After nearly three decades of caring for thousands of animals, we reached a point where we could no longer keep asking the same questions.
Why were so many pet foods built around ingredients we wouldn't choose ourselves?
Why were families spending so much money searching for answers when better nutrition could be part of the solution?
Why wasn't there a pet food that truly reflected everything we had learnt over decades of hands-on experience?
Eventually, we stopped asking those questions.
Instead, we decided to build the food we wished had always existed.
Not to become the biggest pet food company.
Not to follow trends.
Not to create clever marketing.
But to create food we would proudly feed to the animals in our own care.
Building Every Recipe With Purpose
When we developed our recipes, every decision came back to one simple question.
Would we happily feed this to the animals in our own care?
If the answer wasn't yes...
it didn't belong.
That's why we chose quality Australian ingredients wherever possible.
Why we manufacture right here in Australia.
Why our recipes are grain free.
Why we avoid unnecessary fillers.
Why we became the first Australian dry pet food company to include hemp seed oil in every recipe.
Not because it sounded different.
Because we believed it belonged there.
Nearly 30 Years Later
Today, hundreds of thousands of Australian pets have enjoyed Pet Food Australia.
We've received thousands of reviews.
Messages that make us smile.
Photos that brighten our day.
Stories from families whose dogs are happier, healthier and thriving.
Every one of them reminds us why we started.
Everything we've learnt over nearly three decades continues to influence every recipe we make, every ingredient we choose, and every decision we make as a company.
The food we make today isn't based on market trends or clever marketing.
It's built on nearly 30 years of hands-on experience caring for thousands of animals and learning from every single one of them.
That experience is something no factory can manufacture.
No marketing campaign can create.
And no competitor can simply copy.
It has been earned, one animal at a time.
We're still a family business.
Still Australian owned.
Still Australian made.
And our mission remains exactly the same as the day we began.
To create food we would proudly feed to the animals in our own care, so more families can enjoy the same moments that inspired us to start this journey in the first place.
Because every pet deserves the opportunity to live a healthier, happier life.
Thank you for becoming part of our story.
Warm regards,
Lee & Fiona
